A video of the incident, seemingly fueled by racial tensions, was shared on social media on Sunday. Reports suggest that it began with an altercation over space on the dock needed to accommodate a boat on the river. The area is frequently used for the Harriott II Riverboat.
The only audible sounds are the screams of witnesses, but it appears that it began with an argument between a Black man and one of the white men. Another white man rushed in and struck the Black man, who stepped back and tossed his hat into the air. Following this, the confrontation escalated seriously, and some white individuals began assaulting the Black man.
In the video, a witness seemingly observing from a boat on the river repeatedly shouted, “Help that brother out!” to onlookers on the shore. It appears that some individuals from the coast joined in to protect him, and the video shows at least one Black man jumping into the water from a boat on the river. “Get up there, young man!” another voice shouted in the video.
The melee began around 7 p.m. on that Saturday evening, and it reached its climax with people being thrown into the river, others being struck with folding chairs, and some being restrained with handcuffs.
