The letter criticized safety Jonathan Sutherland for his dreadlocks, calling them “disgusting,” “awful,” and “not attractive.” The letter also lamented tattoos in the NFL and suggested that Sutherland should follow the example of former Penn State players who had “clean-cut” appearances.

Sutherland responded with grace and dignity, saying he forgave the fan and was proud of his appearance and heritage. He thanked his teammates, coaches, and fans for their support and love. 

The letter sparked outrage and condemnation from the Penn State community, including coach James Franklin, athletic director Sandy Barbour, university president Eric Barron and many current and former players. They all supported Sutherland and praised his character, leadership, and academic achievements.

His teammates showed solidarity by wearing chains, tattoos, and dreads during games and practices. They also wore t-shirts with the slogan “Chains, Tattoos, Dreads, And We Are” before their game against Iowa to stand against racism and discrimination.
