Kelly Cresswell, a 37-year-old mother, shared her home with 12-year-old Alfie, who has Down syndrome and autism. Their rented house was later identified by PCH as contaminated with asbestos, necessitating relocation for repairs. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they had to live in that house for a year.
During that time, Kelly had to budget carefully to cover her son’s rent and living expenses. She often skipped meals to ensure Alfie’s needs were met. Finding work was not feasible due to the round-the-clock care Alfie required. When her story gained media attention, many people expressed sympathy and support for her and her son. Consequently, “I Eat Asbestos” was born to raise awareness about asbestos dangers and call for government action.
An American YouTuber, Ludwig Ahgren, was seen wearing a T-shirt with the bold red text “I Eat Asbestos” in one of his videos, which attracted the attention of everyone.
