A bystander captured The incident on video, and sparked nationwide outrage and protests.
The trial of the four officers resulted in their acquittal, which triggered the 1992 Los Angeles riots, one of the worst episodes of civil unrest in U.S. history. The riots lasted six days, leaving more than 50 people dead, thousands injured, and hundreds of millions of dollars in property damage. The riots also exposed the deep racial and economic inequalities that plagued the city and the country.
