Gabe Saporta is the former lead singer and founder of Cobra Starship’s electropop band, known for their Billboard Hot 100 top 10 hits “Good Girls Go Bad” and “You Make Me Feel…”. He was also a singer, bassist, and lyricist for the punk band Midtown, which gained a dedicated following and reunited for some shows in 2014 and 2022. He is an entrepreneur and the founder of The Artist Group, a company that helps other musicians with their careers.
“(917) 4000979” is Saporta’s publicly shared phone number from a prank he pulled on his fans in 2007. He posted his phone number on MySpace and asked people to call him, claiming he was bored and lonely and wanted to talk to his fans. He also promised to give free concert tickets to some lucky callers.
Many fans took the bait and called the number, but it wasn’t Saporta’s personal phone number; it was a voicemail service that recorded their messages. Some fans were disappointed, some amused, and some even angry. Gabe Saporta later revealed that he did this prank to promote Cobra Starship’s new album, Viva la Cobra, and would use some of the voicemails as samples in their songs.
The prank became a viral sensation and generated a lot of buzz for Cobra Starship. The phrase “Please call Gabe Saporta 9174000979” became a meme among his followers, and some even got it tattooed on their bodies.
